Proper Illumination
Lighting play's an important part in creating a cozy environment. Importance of good lighting cannot be emphasize enough. It is very important to know what activities you are going to do in that space which will help selecting the fixtures and creating an environment you are looking for.
How much lighting is required? what should be the size of the fixture? . A lot of times I am asked these questions. There are very simple formulas which can help you decide what to look for.
It is a proven formula for calculating the proper amount of light you will need in any space.
1. Living Room
Room Length X Room Width X 1.5 = Proper Amount of Watts to light a room
Example: Say Living room is 12X15 ft. In order to find out the watts required
12 x15 = 180..180 x 1.5 = 2 70 watts needed in that space.
In this case a chandelier with five lights can be used with 60 watt bulbs each.
Above Kitchen Island
Over the Island, multiply the dimension of the Island by 2.5
In the Foyer:
a. Bottom of the Chandelier should be atleast 7 feet from the floor.
b. If there is a window above the front door, centre the chandelier so it can be seen from outside.
c. If the foyer is extra large, you may also want to add wall sconces for additional lighting.
d. Pot lights can be added instead of chandelier/fixture for a more contemporary look.
How to determine the size of the fixture/chandelier width:
Say if the size of the foyer is 12X16 feet than add the dimensions
12+16= 28. Therefore the foyer's chandelier's diameter should be approximately 28 inches in width.
There should be a light every 8 to 10 feet in the hallway.
Either flush or semi flush fictures can be used depending on the height of the celing.
